What is Flutter, and when does one codebase make sense?
Flutter is Google's framework for building apps from a single Dart codebase that compiles to native iOS and Android binaries. It draws its own interface instead of wrapping platform widgets, so what the designer approves is what ships on both platforms.
That rendering decision is the entire trade-off, and it cuts both ways. You get one codebase, one design system, one test suite and one release process, which usually removes thirty to forty per cent of the build cost and all of the drift between platforms. What you give up is the free inheritance of iOS and Android controls. A product whose whole appeal is that it feels unmistakably like an iPhone app needs real design effort here, and occasionally needs Swift instead.
Where Flutter is clearly the right call: business apps. Field and delivery tools, inspection and inventory apps, booking and ordering, staff portals, internal software. Offline reliability, fast iteration and consistency across a fleet of cheap devices matter more in those products than platform-specific polish, and Dart compiles ahead of time, so scrolling stays smooth on the mid-range Android hardware most users actually own.
The limits are worth saying out loud. Anything leaning on brand-new platform APIs, deep system integration or heavy media processing will need native code somewhere; platform channels make that possible and we write it when it comes up. And if the app is really a wrapper around your website with a home-screen icon, it should not be an app. We have talked more than one client out of that, usually towards a better mobile site.

Flutter vs React Native
Both give you one codebase, and the decision is usually about your team rather than the framework. React Native reuses JavaScript and React skills and renders real platform components. Flutter is more consistent across devices and noticeably smoother on cheap Android hardware, because it owns its rendering. Have a React web team already? Choose React Native. Starting fresh? We usually say Flutter.

Will a Flutter app feel like a real app?
Yes. It compiles to native code and nobody can tell from performance or gestures. The real difference is that Flutter draws its own controls, so an app that has to match iOS conventions precisely needs deliberate design work. We build those adaptations when the product calls for them and skip them when it does not.
How much does a Flutter app cost?
A well-scoped first release with authentication, a handful of core screens and one backend integration usually runs $18,000 to $40,000 for both platforms.
