Make an image fit an upload limit
Check the required format, maximum file size and minimum dimensions first. Choose a size such as 20 KB, 50 KB or 100 KB, compress the image and inspect the actual result. A smaller file is useful only if its details remain readable.
Example: prepare a photo for a 50 KB upload limit
Your application form accepts a JPG photo up to 50 KB. Start with a clear original and check the form's minimum dimensions.
- Add your photo: Choose a JPG, PNG or WebP image from your device. Select JPEG if the form requires a JPG file.
- Set the size limit: Choose 50 KB or type the maximum allowed by your form. A maximum is a ceiling, so a smaller result is fine.
- Choose whether dimensions may shrink: Leave downscaling on for a smaller file, or turn it off when you must keep the selected dimensions. The quality floor sets how low JPEG or WebP quality may go.
- Compare and download: Run compression, move the comparison divider and inspect small details. Check the actual output size and dimensions before submitting the downloaded file.
File Size, Resolution, and Encoding Quality
Digital image file size depends on two factors: total pixel count (width x height) and compression efficiency. When an image contains millions of pixels, reducing file size purely by lowering quality can introduce compression noise and banding. Allowing proportional dimension scaling enables the compressor to maintain clearer visual contrast while meeting strict byte limits.
Common questions
What happens if my target size cannot be reached?
The tool shows the smallest result it could make with your settings and a notice if it remains above the limit. You can allow further downscaling, choose JPEG or WebP, lower the quality floor or increase the size limit. Check that text and faces remain readable.
What is the difference between compression and resizing?
Compression lowers the number of bytes used to encode the pixel data while keeping or slightly adjusting dimensions. Resizing explicitly alters the image width and height in pixels.
Should I choose WebP or JPEG for compression?
WebP generally provides better compression efficiency than standard JPEG at similar visual quality. However, if your destination portal explicitly requires a .jpg or .jpeg file, choose JPEG.
Are my images stored or transmitted?
Files selected from your device stay in this browser tab for processing; we do not upload them to our server. If you choose Google Drive import, Google sends the selected files directly to your browser after you grant access.
Why is the compressed file larger than my original?
Changing formats can increase file size, especially for a small image that is already well compressed. The tool shows the actual size change. Try WebP or JPEG, or keep the original if it already meets your destination's requirements.
Should I resize or convert an image before compressing it?
